Propane in East Tennessee
Similar to the international AFV market, the AFV that East Tennessee had the most of (as of about two years ago) was propane vehicles. This has recently been overtaken by biodiesel. This was due to the fact that most propane retailers or distributors use propane as the fuel for many of their vehicles, whether those be service trucks or bobtails (fuel delivery trucks). However, fewer fleets are using them now due to slightly increasing conversion costs. These fleets are probably looking at the short-term cost and not the long-term cost, which should show longer life on these vehicles and a payback on that increased conversion cost.

The first local fleet to mention is Schwan's Fine Foods, which has been running the vast majority
of its national fleet on propane since about 1980. There are over 60 Schwan's delivery vehicles that run
around East TN on propane.
Other than the propane delivery fleets, the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga has almost 20
propane AFVs they operate, and Knoxville Area Transit (KAT), with their new trolley purchases now
has about 15 vehicles that run on propane, including dedicated vans, a dedicated parking lot/street
sweeper and hybrid trolleys. The vans and the sweeper run on propane alone while the trolleys run on a
combination of propane and electricity. And KAT has plans to expand their propane fleet with new van and
trolley purchases in the not-so-distant future!
Sevierville now has propane AFVs, too. They have a mass transit fleet that, believe it or not,
runs completely on propane. Four hybrid-electric trolleys that run on propane and electricity and four
dedicated propane trolleys. Both started running in 2005. There's also a possibility that, in
conjunction with the building of a multi-alt-fuel station in Sevierville, they are looking to purchase
new gasoline police cars and convert them to run on propane as well (bi-fuel
configuration).
Certainly last but not least to mention here is the CAC Transit operations. Karen Estes has a
couple of years of working on this project under her belt and has succeeded in getting 8 dedicated
propane buses in use in the CAC Transit program. A propane tank was installed at the main refueling
facility in Knoxville and those vehicles now refuel there. Congrats Karen!
